Past Matron of Summerville 143 O.E.S. Passes

Posted in Latest News from the Lodge at 5:53 pm by Administrator

Pearl Cantrell, who was Worthy Matron of Summerville Chapter No. 143 in 1967-1968 passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008.

Following is the Obituary as posted in the Charleston Post and Courier:

F. Pearl Cantrell

CANTRELL, F. Pearl F. Pearl Cantrell, 85, of Summerville, SC, peacefully went to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at a hospital in Summerville, SC. Born August 9, 1922 in Chattanooga, TN, she was the eldest of Glen Gladish Gray and Glennie Margaret Atwood Gray’s eight children. She met and married Thomas Jefferson Cantrell. While he was working at a foundry, Pearl went to trade school and learned to weld. It was the beginning of World War II when the federal government notified Pearl her country needed her. She and her husband packed what they could in one steamer trunk and together with their first child rode a Greyhound bus to Charleston. Pearl was a welder at the Charleston Naval Shipyard; Thomas became a marine machinist. Near the end of the War, their son Lionel was born and Pearl did not return to the shipyard. In the mid 1960s Pearl owned and operated TinyTots Daycare Center. She was a member of Ladson Baptist Church and volunteered in the nursery. Pearl enjoyed traveling the US, Canada, the Caribbean and spent a month in Germany living with her son Bruce. Throughout her life, Pearl was a trailblazer but it was her faith and family that were most important to her. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Joyce Roumillat, of Moncks Corner, Lionel B. Cantrell and his wife Jo Ann of Summerville, and Bruce T. Cantrell and his wife Theresa of Raleigh, NC; two brothers: Ernest and Marvin Gray, both of TN; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband and two grandsons preceded her in death. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 6:00-8:00PM at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 29, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel and will be officiated by Pastor John Jenkins of Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, North Charleston, SC. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
